Issue No. 7

Happy spring!

It is April and it is not a joke.

So here it goes, round 7.

But first- a favorite recent patient quote:

“I FEEL LIKE I BLEW ALL THE BOLTS ON MY BOILER.”

(R)eading: Oaxaca Journal and The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat by Oliver Sacks are great. Oliver Sacks is a neurologist who wrote about the unusual and astounding way neurological conditions teach us about being human.  The second title comes from a man that Dr. Sacks worked with who had visual agnosia – he could not recognize faces or objects.  Dr. O enjoyed reading these while away in Oaxaca, Mexico for a couple of weeks while soaking up some sunshine and leaning into creative energy.

(E)ating: Happy Pear has been filling our bellies with all the yummy things this month. Here are two great recipes we have tried and enjoyed:

https://thehappypear.ie/plant-based-and-vegan-recipes/grannys-irish-stew/

The pasta bake is a great one for busy folks that want to make something that requires little to no dishes and a short amount of time to bake.

(P)laying: We have been enjoying using stationary and writing a letter or two to humans in our world that bring in extra sunshine without even knowing it. We vote you walk down the card aisle the next time you are in the store to find one that reminds you of someone, write them a note and send it. Local businesses like Das Manos, That Feeling Co. and Alaska Mill and Feed also have great stationary options, too, and are often created by Alaskan artists.

When was the last time you wrote or received a letter?

Snail mail is fun.

(O)bsessing: We have been obsessing over the sunshine that seems to be showing itself more and more. With that, the dust mites around us pop up and become more noticeable. So, we have spring cleaning on our minds, especially clean windows. (We are also trying to ignore the volcano – *cough, Mt. Spurr*) that might take our dusting to a whole new level.)

Window cleaning is a satisfying activity with an instant change from before to after.

(R)ecommending: We are here to rally behind you to find something small to celebrate this week and not let it pass by.  Did you drink enough water? Did you try out a new outfit or pair of earrings? Did you get outside for a walk? Did you make a recipe you have been wanting to try? Did you socialize with others and make a connection or two? Did you say yes or no where you really wanted to? Did you just keep breathing?

Small things count and matter.

And – did you know that Martinelli’s Sparkling Cider is 100% juice and has no added sugars?!
Cheers!

(T)reating: This is a great treat if you have yet to try it:

  • Grab a raw date, a walnut and your choice of nut butter.
  • Open the date, spread a light amount of nut butter on each side and tuck in a walnut.
  • Close up the opened date.
  • Savor the goodness. It is delicious.

We hope your April is a really good one!
